1st Class Honours in Economics
From the National University of Singapore while playing Mahjong regularly & pursuing marriage partner daily. Yes, many hated him but he still gave free tuition to every single one of them who approached him for help. Teachers mostly loved him as he did their job.
Because he has mastered the highest levels of the academic system, Mr. Kelvin knows exactly how to deconstruct strict exam rubrics. He doesn't just teach theory; he teaches his students the 'cheat codes' to scoring, showing them exactly what examiners are looking for to award maximum marks.
5 As in A Levels
Scored 5 As at Cambridge Singapore A Levels, but with mostly Es at Prelims…Today, he inspires his students & teaches them how he cheated made it. At TET, we have students that propel from U or S at Prelims to A!
9 A1s in O Levels.
Scored 9 A1s at Cambridge Singapore O Levels. Same at Prelims. He had not learnt Mahjong then. He also wasn’t interested in RI boys. Still not interested.
2 Scholarship Awards
2 Singapore Government Public Service Commission Scholarship Awards (Humanities and Merit Awards). The beginnings of his Economics brains – Got $, take first.
NUS Valedictorian
That means he got to talk while others kept silent. Unforgettable experience and when coupled with compliments by a High Court Judge (VIP of the ceremony, whose name he cannot remember!), it probably ignited his passion for talking alot teaching.

Finalist in an International Economics Journal (Essay) Competition (UAUJE)
Finalist in an International Economics Journal (Essay) Competition (UAUJE) out of thousands of contestants worldwide. “Are Economies Moving in the Direction of Smaller Firms?” as published here. Apparently “took revenge” after his NUS tutor graded his research paper an E. His next paper was graded A & submitted for the competition. No wonder his Economics essays skills so power! And yes, he photocopied for his classmates (who asked).
“His academic prowess earned the respect of both his peers and his teachers.”
Mr. Jamie Reeves
Renowned economics teacher from RJC & former Director of Humanities Programme in RI/RJC.
Kelvin is the founder and principal tutor of The Economics Tutor offering Economics Tuition in Singapore for over 2 decades. He started out peer tutoring in NUS and was later offered Senior Tutor positions by both NUS and NTU as well as scholarships to pursue a PhD in Economics , which he eventually declined.
4 years with the Singapore Government Administrative Service, possessing economics policy-making experiences. He was also a Secretariat Subcommittee Member of Singapore’s Economics Review Committee 2001 to review the economics strategies of Singapore. The A-Level and IB syllabi heavily test real-world policy evaluation. Because Mr. Kelvin actually drafted government policies, he teaches students how governments make real decisions. This allows his students to write the highly mature, multi-perspective Evaluation (AO3) points that examiners demand for Distinction-grade essays. In other words, these are vital experiences for imparting real-world applications and evaluative insights to students of both our JC Economics Tuition A-Level (especially H2 Economics Tuition) & IB Economics Tuition. The understanding of the Singapore Economy is also a very important aspect of the A Level Economics syllabus. Real-world examples are also a major requirement for IB Economics Essays. It is no wonder why Mr. Kelvin Hong is able to impart deep insights to his students as well as highly mature evaluation points that will impress examiners.
Successful Entrepreneur, possessing unique Microeconomics experience. Past businesses include training institutes and service retail chain stores (now part of listed firm in Singapore Stock Exchange) spanning entire Singapore as well as with presence in neighbouring countries & China. Such business experience is critical in helping students deeply appreciate Market Structure & Theory of Firm, arguably the most challenging of all topics. By providing many insights, Mr Kelvin Hong helps all his students gain deeper understanding. He also inspires his students to become future entrepreneurs & investors like himself. As he often says in class, “the best job is to be able to create jobs for others.”
Former Chairman of National Economics Quiz Committee. Those were the days when Mr Hong got to set questions to test JC Economics students in nationwide economics competitions. Sponsor and Judge of 2022’s international Youth Financial Analysis Competition. These are unique experiences that allow Mr Kelvin to quite accurately predict examination questions to the delight of his students. In 2016, an almost identical Case Study came out for the H2 Economics A Level examinations. In 2017, about 5 out of 6 A Level essay questions and answers were predicted by Mr Kelvin. Accurate predictions were also often experienced for IB Economics exams! But please do not expect this to happen every year! And don’t ask him for 4D numbers!
Trained Top Business Executives in various public and private sector organisations including in seminar organised by the Singapore Business Federation. Could this be related to why students often commend Mr Hong for his uniquely effective style – “highly engaging”, “eccentric yet effective”, “lessons were also fun” ? Do not expect Mr Hong to be like your regular school teacher or tutor. Read our student reviews!
Trainer of other economics tutors including 1st Class Hons degree holders, PhD candidates and teachers. Some of them have gratefully joined Mr Kelvin as Senior Economics Tutors.
So when you enrol, you are learning from the ‘Tutor of Tutors.’ Instead of relying on generic school notes, you get exclusive, direct access to the proprietary frameworks, summary notes and model essays that schools and teachers actually buy to train their own students.
Author of JC A Level & IB Economics Study Guides and Model Essays. Students have ditched their school’s lecture notes for Mr Kelvin Economics books. Not pushed by us but it happens often! Ace Your Microeconomics & Ace Your Macroeconomics have rave reviews. Model Essays for IB Economics as well as A Level Economics Model Essays for the Singapore Economy have also been highly sought after including by Schools and Teachers and are sold world-wide!
Innovator – Economics Songs & Dance, Economics Notes, Infographics & Mindmaps. Those were the days! Mr Hong got the whole class to stand up & dance to Economics terms! Oh yes! But during Covid “new normal”, he would have be fined…maybe jailed…or maybe just infected…
1 of only 4 youths selected to represent Singapore in regional Young Leaders’ Initiative. Ok that was long long ago. He isn’t that young anymore.
Recognised Straits Times Forum Contributor, including Week’s Top Letter. Inspiring students to contribute through application of Economics concepts. That is a legacy Mr Kelvin hopes to leave his students with. Not so much the grades…but really the concepts and thinking skills that can last them a lifetime, which they can apply to both personal life decisions as well as for their careers. Quite a number of his students have also gone on to read Economics in the universities.
Featured in Straits Times, Channel News Asia & The New Paper. As he has lost his youthful looks, he now prefers to shy away from the limelight. These days, he only “gives face” to his students. He was quite recently interviewed by The Business Times on tuition industry in Singapore and shared his macroeconomic insights live on Money FM 89.3.
Mr. Kelvin Hong was recently invited to speak live on Money FM 89.3. Listen to his expert macroeconomic analysis on inflation, the cost of living, and standard of living in Singapore—highly relevant topics for JC and IB Economics students!
