JC1 H2 Economics Crash Course in Singapore

Fix your JC1 cracks before JC2 breaks you

Most students struggle in JC2 not because Macroeconomics is hard, but because their JC1 foundation has cracks. With Prelims, Project Work and university applications piling up, you can't be fixing Elasticity and Market Failure gaps then. We fix them now.

Who this is for

Built for JC1 students entering a decisive year

You don't need to have failed Promos to belong here. You need a Microeconomics foundation that won't buckle when Macro lands on top of it.

Your Promo grade was a wake-up call

A C or below in JC1 Promos usually means gaps in Elasticity, Market Failure or diagram technique — not laziness. Those gaps compound in JC2 rather than disappearing.

You did fine, but you're not safe

A B in Promos and a B at A-Levels are different exams. Students with solid Promo grades join to consolidate the syllabus and get ahead on application and evaluation.

Theory of the Firm never landed

It's abstract, heavily graphical, and almost always rushed at the end of JC1. It's also H2-only, so most students arrive in JC2 having never properly learned it.

You know the content, not the marks

You can define the terms but can't reach Level 3 evaluation. That's a technique problem, and technique is exactly what an intensive block fixes fastest.

The syllabus

Three modules that carry JC1 Microeconomics

Module 1 · Phase 1

Micro Foundations

Covers: DD/SS, Elasticities (PED, PES, YED, XED), Price Controls, Taxes & Subsidies.

The problem: You lose marks on messy diagrams, or still confuse a change in demand with a change in quantity demanded.

The fix: We master the Price Mechanism. Perfect tax and subsidy diagrams, and elasticity applied to real contexts — such as why cigarette taxes fail to cut consumption.

Module 2 · Phase 1

Market Failure

Covers: Efficiency, Externalities, Public Goods, Consumer Ignorance, Asymmetric Information.

The problem: You know the definitions but can't reach the Level 3 evaluation marks that separate a B from an A.

The fix: We move past rote learning into the policy dimension — evaluating why government intervention works in theory and fails in practice. See current cases on our real-world examples page.

Module 3 · Phase 2 · H2 only

Theory of the Firm

Covers: Cost Curves, Revenue, Profit Maximisation, Market Structures, Firm Strategies & Performance.

The problem: The killer topic — abstract, highly graphical, rushed at the very end of JC1, and tested exclusively in H2.

The fix: We consolidate the whole topic, master the Marginal Cost and Marginal Revenue relationships, and decode Oligopoly behaviour — price wars versus collusion.

Our methodology

The Flipped Classroom approach

We don't spend expensive live coaching hours lecturing on basic definitions. You arrive already knowing them.

  1. The Digital Groundwork — 24 hours of concept videos

Before you step into the classroom, you log in. Kelvin's premium concept videos cover definitions, basic theory and diagram construction at your own pace, so you arrive at the live session ready to apply rather than ready to listen.

  2. The Live Application — 33 hours with Kelvin Hong

Class time goes entirely to high-value scoring skills: testing conceptual understanding, deconstructing difficult Paper 1 CSQs and Paper 2 essays, structuring answers with the PEEL(ED)™ framework, and drilling the evaluation technique that secures an A.

Your tutor

Taught personally by Chief Tutor Kelvin Hong

This programme is designed and conducted by Kelvin Hong, who has taught Economics since 1998. His methodology is deliberately narrow: strip away textbook jargon, and teach strictly to the Cambridge Assessment Objectives.

No fluff

The exact keywords Cambridge examiners hunt for in Papers 1 and 2 — and nothing that doesn't earn a mark.

Real-world firm insight

As a practising entrepreneur, Kelvin teaches the H2-only Theory of the Firm from actual firm behaviour, not just cost curves.

Author of the free H2 TYS answer keys

Learn the answering standard from the person who wrote the model answers your cohort is revising from.

Built for grade jumps

Specialises in moving students two to three grades within a single intensive block.

I finally understood H2 Economics concepts in Firms and Decisions and became far more confident attempting those questions. Thank you Mr Kelvin and TET!

Mr Kelvin was so clear, and made lessons fun and interesting. The exposure to numerous essays and case studies helped a lot. Really glad I did not miss it!

★★★★★

A very intensive programme — quite hard at times to keep up, but I would have been very lost without it. I'm certainly grasping Econs concepts better now.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is the Hols Elevate Intensive?

A holiday crash course that consolidates JC1 H2 Microeconomics — Micro Foundations, Market Failure and Theory of the Firm — before JC2 begins, using a flipped-classroom model taught live by Kelvin Hong.

Is this for H1 or H2 Economics students?

It's designed for H2 students. Module 3 covers Theory of the Firm and Market Structures, tested exclusively in H2 and absent from the H1 syllabus. H1 students still benefit from Modules 1 and 2 — contact us to discuss.

Is it only for students who did badly in Promos?

No. It's built to rebuild a shaky foundation, but students with solid Promo grades join to consolidate the syllabus and get a head start on JC2's application and evaluation skills.

Do I need to watch the videos before class?

Yes. The 24-hour pre-lesson video library covers definitions and basic theory, so the 33 live hours focus entirely on application, exam technique and essay structure.

When does the next intake start?

Phase 1 begins 30 November 2026 and Phase 2 begins 4 January 2027. Hols Elevate runs across the November to January holiday period each year — contact us for current availability.

Can I attend online instead of in person?

Yes. The programme runs physically at Newton / Novena or live via Google Meet, and all physical materials are provided either way.

Do I need to be an existing TET student to join?

No. The crash course is self-contained and open to students from any JC. Many students use it as their first experience of our teaching before joining our weekly H2 Economics Tuition programme.

What happens after the crash course ends?

Most students continue into weekly H2 Economics Tuition for JC2, where we build Macroeconomics on the foundation this programme secures. There's no obligation to continue.
