Introduction
In the world of IB tuition, numbers speak louder than promises. With the release of the final results, I am incredibly proud to announce that for the 2025 examination cohort, 90% of my students achieved a perfect Grade 7 in Economics.
This isn’t an accident. It is the result of a structured, logical approach to the syllabus that breaks down complex economic theory into digestible, exam-ready answers.
However, as an educator committed to transparency, I believe we learn more from the outliers than the average. Today, I want to address the 10% who did not score a Grade 7 in 2025. By analyzing why they missed the mark, we can outline exactly what you (or your child) need to do to ensure you fall into the top 90% for the upcoming 2026 exams.
The Breakdown: Why Students Missed the Grade 7 in 2025
When analyzing the students who didn’t achieve the top band last year, the data is very clear. It almost never comes down to a lack of intelligence. It comes down to strategy, timing, and effort.
Here are the three specific categories the remaining 10% fell into:
1. The “Too Little, Too Late” (The Logic Gap)
The most frustrating category involves students who sought our IB Economics tuition far too late in the game—often around August of their final year (just months before the final exams).
Joining late is not a dealbreaker on its own. We have crash courses and intensive strategies to fix this. The problem arises when these students do not take the recommendation for extra lessons.
The Reality: If you have missed 18 months of content, you cannot catch up in 3 months with a standard weekly lesson. It is mathematically and logically impossible to bridge that gap without increasing the frequency of help.
- The Lesson: If you start late, you must be willing to put in double the hours. Refusing extra support when you are behind is a guaranteed way to miss the 7.
2. The “Low Effort” Student
This group is the most preventable. These students had the ability and the time, but they lacked the execution.
A Grade 7 in IB Economics requires more than just understanding the concepts during class; it requires active recall and essay practice. This group frequently missed assignment deadlines or skipped the structured homework entirely.
- The Lesson: You cannot “out-smart” the IB. Even with the best IB Economics tutor, if you don’t do the practice papers or assignments issued, you won’t build the muscle memory needed for the exam.
3. The “Success Story” 6s
I want to make a clear distinction here: Not every non-7 is a failure.
There is a group of students within this 10% for whom a Grade 6 was a massive, celebratory victory. These are students who came to me with significant academic challenges or a very low starting baseline (sometimes failing grades of 2 or 3).
Through sheer grit and determination, they clawed their way up to a solid Grade 6. For these students, that 6 represents more effort than some students put in for a 7. I am incredibly proud of their progress in the 2025 exams.

How to Guarantee You Are in the 90% for 2026
The difference between a 7 and a 5 is rarely a mystery. It is a formula. My students from the Class of 2025 who scored 7s shared these common traits:
- Consistency: They attended classes regularly and didn’t let gaps in knowledge linger.
- Trust the Process: Success leaves clues. I have outlined the specific study habits of top students in my article on How to score a 7 in IB Economics HL & SL, but the short version is simple: when I recommend a specific essay structure, they follow the advice.
- Output over Input: They didn’t just read the textbook; they wrote the essays and got them evaluated.
Final Thoughts
Achieving a Grade 7 is not about magic. It is about logic.
If you join early, follow the structure, and put in the work, the results are predictable. If you are struggling or starting late, be prepared to accept the help offered to bridge the gap.

Super satisfied with the results 🙂
Went to Mr Kelvin Hong for IB Economics Tuition HL, and Extended Essay EE consults.
I got a 7 for HL Economics and an A for my Economics extended essay. Super satisfied with the results 😃
Mr Hong is very knowledgeable about Economics, even things outside of the syllabus that may be relevant for IB students doing IAs and EEs.
All his lessons are also relevant to the IB curriculum and I can tell he references the syllabus guide closely.
He is very very good at teaching and helping us understand concepts 🙏 and has many useful resources like cheat sheets, videos, mind maps, etc.
He also goes above and beyond and stays back after class to answer any of our questions and gives detailed and relevant feedback on all our IAs.
Lessons are also always filled with passion and energy 🙏
Would defo recommend his classes 🙏
